Squamous Cell Carcinoma (Intraosseous or Involving Bone)

Features:

   •       Irregular radiolucency with poorly defined, moth-eaten borders

   •       Possible cortical destruction and pathologic fracture

   •       May show periosteal reaction or infiltration around roots

 

Demographics:

   •       Typically older adults (5th decade and above)

   •       Higher incidence in individuals with risk factors such as tobacco or alcohol use

 

Presentation:

   •       Pain, numbness (especially of the inferior alveolar nerve distribution if the mandible is involved), loose teeth, or non-healing extraction site

   •       Soft tissue ulceration or mass may be noted clinically
