Condensing Osteitis (Focal Sclerosing Osteomyelitis)

Features:

   •       A localized area of increased radiopacity around the apex of a tooth with pulpitis or history of infection

   •       No radiolucent halo; the root outline is still usually visible

 

Demographics:

   •       Occurs in any age group but often middle-aged adults

   •       More common in mandibular molars or premolars

 

Presentation:

   •       Usually associated with a tooth that has chronic pulp or periapical inflammation

   •       May be asymptomatic or have mild symptoms related to the affected tooth
